Joseph Vagnier

February 13, 1976-July 3, 1997

In the evening of July 1,1997 Joseph Vagnier responded to a call for an overturned vehicle due to a massive flood. The rain had fallen at a rate of 4 inches in less than two hours. While checking to see if the vehicle was occupied, Joey's partner was swept under the raging waters. Joey was reaching in an attempt to rescue his partner when he was also pulled under and trapped underneath a tractor trailer. Though Joey is not with us in body any longer, his spirit remains with us all. This is a poem that was written by a member of Holiday Park Fire Department.

A firefighter gives their all everyday
Makes many sacrifices along the way
Each time they respond to an emergency call
There's always a chance that they may fall
On Tuesday evening when the call came in
Joey jumped on the truck as he did time and again
I'm sure he was thinking about what he could do
How he could help someone be it me or you
He answered that call to save someone from harm
and no one knew that it would be his last alarm.
We miss you Scrappy in our hearts you remain
Gone but not forgotten until we meet again.
You did your job well always gave your best
and now in God's arms may you find peace and rest.
May God bless you.
